I have been an athlete pretty much my whole life. Growing up participating in whatever sport came my way, I always found a way to be active. I did a bit of Track and Field, diving and downhill ski racing in my high school years and Division 3 Soccer, cross country and competitive horseback riding in college years. After college my main focus was competitive horse riding focusing mostly on Show Jumping which consumed most of my time. Being a rider meant you needed to maintain a certain level of fitness to perform at a high level, and I thought that running would satisfy that fitness need, but as I have come to find out over the years, one fitness component will not suffice. Running will not make me the best athlete or rider I could be, and for me to demand my horse be the best athlete he/she can be, I need to maintain that same responsibility since we are a team. I tried various forms of cross training after college, and ended up participating in 5 Tough Mudder races, and a Warrior Dash.
While all this was good for general fitness and a bit of fun, CrossFit has been that link to my fitness I had missed for all those years. CrossFit combines cardio with strength and constantly varied functional movements which makes me a much better athlete overall. I fell in love with CrossFit from the first day of Foundations, and have been hooked ever since. The workouts are always changing and my performance as a rider and my overall athleticism has improved significantly.
Another thing that I can say is CrossFit satisfies my competitive nature. Every day I compete with myself for better scores, faster times, and heavier weights with the hope that my fitness and strength will keep climbing in an upward trend over time. It also affords me the opportunity to take part in competitions locally which have become part of my short and long term goals as an athlete.
This is just the beginning of my CrossFit Career. There will be many more competitions and opportunities for the future. I am excited to help others become better, more functional athletes, and to also better myself in the process.
